All we need is LOVE

Published by Joy on

Ok, Rose and I agreed that we would not discuss politics in this blog, but I might kind of make this post slightly political because I just have SO MANY FEELINGS. However, I would also argue that this post is NOT political because all humans, regardless of political ideology, should care about protecting the lives of all children. Amirite? I AM RIGHT.

I just listened to six students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School speak at a forum, and I feel like an entire layer of my cynicism has been stripped away (but don’t you worry, plenty of it remains). These 17-20 year olds were not just prepared to speak about specific issues and extremely poised while doing so, but they also FUCKING CARED ABOUT ALL HUMANS. Yes, ALL humans. Not just straight white Christian humans, y’all. ALL humans. And you know what else? They believed that politicians can and should be good people. It is rather fucked up that we currently feel surprised when politicians act like decent human beings. That should be the norm. Politicians are civil SERVants. They exist to serve their people, so why, why, WHY do they support laws that exclude people? Why are so many communities left out of our political narrative? WE ARE ALL HUMANS and, to quote the students, “we all bleed the same blood” and “bullets don’t discriminate”. Hey ohhhhh.

Okay. I think I’ve already gotten plenty of feelings out (the theme of this week’s posts is clearly “catharsis”). I was just beyond inspired to listen to these students promoting love. I don’t care how fucking hokey it sounds, but what we need is love. In this country, we celebrate black music and black bodies, but we don’t LOVE black PEOPLE. We laugh about “flamboyant gay best friends”, but we don’t LOVE gay PEOPLE. IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE. JUST LOVE EVERY HUMAN.

I’ve exceeded my all-caps word limit. And thus, I will end this post now. Love y’all <3
