Motivation, Motivation, wherefore art thou? Could you not be of my house, in my brain, inspiring me to get shit done? Why do you hide when you know I have Things to Do? Where are you even hiding? For sure, you have some back-ups like Responsibility and Duty and “Get-this-done-you-lazy-shit-or-you’ll-be-in-some-serious-fucking-trouble”. But I feel like you could put it some more effort. You should be around so that I actually WANT to do the things I need to do. That’s literally your only job – to inspire me and make me feel good about the progress I’m making towards being a real adult, one tiny step at a time.

Motivation, you’re kind of a slacker. If I could fire you, I would. But I can’t because you can’t fire emotions or whatever. So, I guess I need to work on figuring out how to create a better environment for you and make it SO SIMPLE for you to do your job, you couldn’t possibly fail to do it. Now I know, I know. You’re not the worst Motivation out there. You could have figuratively skipped town entirely and hid for years and years so that I would barely have gotten anything at all accomplished. But look – just because you’re not the worst doesn’t mean you shouldn’t aspire to do better. In fact, it’s precisely because I know you could do better that I have such high expectations of you. So, let’s brainstorm together:

  • Show up. The first step to doing more, is actually being present for your job. You can tag team/carpool with Responsibility or Duty or whatever, just make sure you’re there when we need to get things done.
  • Try actively working together with Responsibility. This has the added benefit of making Responsibility less of a wet blanket than you and I both know they are.
  • Support in retrospect. You can try retroactive support to give the illusion that you were always there to begin with. This gives people the feeling that you may actually show up the next time we have Things to Do.

We’ll continue to work on this list together, Motivation. I know you’re trying, but I believe you can do better. This has been your end-of-year-review. Let’s make 2018 a great one!
